Sydney golden wattle is an acacia native to portions of extreme southeastern Australia. It has become invasive in other parts of Australia (Victoria, New South Wales), New Zealand, South Africa, Spain, Portugal and Brazil. It is classified as a potential invasive in California. Plants: Plants occur as bushy shrubs or erect trees up to 26′ (8 m) high, growing very rapidly. Leaves: Dark green, oblong-lanceolate, leathery and straplike, with two or three prominent parallel veins. Each leaf is 2-6″ (6-15 cm) long, ¼-1¼″ (8-35 mm) wide, blunt or pointed at the far end, and tapered at the base. Flowers: Striking, bright yellow flowers occur in cylindrical spikes 1½-2″ (3.8-5 cm) long and ¼-⅜″ (6.3-9.5 mm) wide. Fruits: This pea family plant sports brown pods 1¾-4″ (5-10 cm) × ⅛-3/16″ (4-6 mm), straight or somewhat curved. Edibility: Online References:
