Red birch felt mite is a brilliant red coloration on the leaves of birch species. They are native to northwestern Europe and northeastern North America.
Identification: Red birch felt mite is a gall—the product of gall-forming mites. The mites themselves are diminutive, less than 7.9 mils (0.2 mm) in size, and the galls are not especially harmful to the host plant. The mites suck sap from the leaves, secreting chemicals that form the red, felt-like growths.
