Echinopsis spachiana (Lemaire) H. Friedrich & G. D. Rowley 1974

Golden torch cereus, hedgehog cactus, white torch cactus, golden torch

This cactus is native to western Argentina, and is not found in the wild in North America. The common name golden torch applies to the spine color, not the flowers.

Plants: Plants consist of several lime green cylindrical stems up to 6½′ (2 m) in height. Each stem is about 1¾–2″ (5–6 cm) around, and has 10-15 ribs. The spines along the sides occur in groups of 8-10, each ⅛–⅜″ (4–10 mm) long. They are reddish yellow when young, becoming whiter as they age.

Leaves:

Flowers: White, very showy, up to 6″ (15 cm) around and up to 8″ (20 cm) deep. The funnel-shaped portion of the outside of the flowers is hairy and pink in color. Flowers open at night, and appear from June to July.

Fruits: Green hairy fruits with black seeds.
