Glyceria striata (Lam.) Hitchc.

Fowl manna grass

Fowl mannagrass is native to and widespread throughout North America.

Plants: This perennial burnchgrass, so-called because it grows in tussocks or clumps, is 2–3½′ (60–106 cm) tall, with with light or medium green culms.

Leaves: Somewhat rough-textured, 6–10″ long ⨉ ⅛–⅜″ wide (15–25 cm ⨉ 6–12 mm).

Flowers: Loose panicles are 3–11″ (8–27 cm) long, with spreading or drooping branches. Each panicle has 15-50 stalked spikelets with 3-6 fertile florets. Some have a sterile floret at the tip.

Fruits: Spikelets are 1/16–⅛″ (2–4.5 mm) long. At the base of each spikelet are a pair of egg-shaped glumes. Mature florets are brown, with grains that ripen to dark shiny brown.

Habitats: Lakes, ponds, marshes, river- or lakeshores, swamps, wetland margins.
