Pincushion protea
Pincushion proteas are native to south Africa, and not found in the wild in North America. This is a cultivar.
Plants: Pincushion proteas are named for their pincushion-like appearance.
Leaves: Leathery, 1¾–3″ (5–7.5 cm) long, and sharp-tipped.
Flowers: Flowerheads are 3–3½″ (8.5–9 cm) across, rounded, with many thin petals resembling pins.
Fruits: Achenes covered by a fleshy pellicle called an elaiosome, which attracts ants that spread the seeds.
Habitats: Natural plants are found in open, hilly terrain, in acid soil, at elevations of 98–1476′ (30–450 m).
