Neckera pennata Hedw.

Shingle moss, neckera moss

These mosses occur in temperate regions worldwide.

Identification: These form shelf-like growths on sugar maples that are at least 120 years old. Plants are 1¾–4″ (5–11 cm) in size. Stems have only a few branches.

Leaves: Oblong-ovate, 1/16–⅛ ⨉ 1/32–⅛″ (2–3 ⨉ 1.2–5 mm), with serrulate or smooth edges.

Habitats: On the bases or trunks of old growth trees, and on boulders, or rock cliffs, at elevations between 984–8530′ (300–2600 m).
