Nolana galapagensis (Christoph.) Johnst.
Galápagos clubleaf
Galápagos clubleaf is native, and unique to, the Galápagos Islands. It probably diverged from other Nolana species 4-8 million years ago, perhaps via seeds floating from Peru on oceanic currents.
Plants: Perennial succulent shrub forms densely branced mounds up to 12″ tall ⨉ 2′ wide (30 ⨉ 60 cm).
Leaves: Small fleshy succulent bright green leaves are clustered in dense groups.
Flowers: Small bell-shaped flowers are white, with five petals and prominent stamens. Flowers appear sporadically throughout the year.
Fruits: A schizocarp that dries and splits into five or fewer mericarps per flower. Each mericarp contains 1–7 tiny seeds adapted for dispersal by wind or marine currents.
Habitats: Seacoasts, usually within a few meters of the high water line.
