Gray matplant, tiquilla
Gray matplant is native to Baltra, Daphne, Fernandina, Floreana, Genovesa, Isabella, Marchena, Pinta, Rábida, San Cristóbal, Santa Cruz and Santiago—most of the Galapago archipelago. Similar varieties:
Plants: Grows in low clumps or mats up to 1½′ (50 cm) tall.
Leaves: Tight clusters of grayish, hairy, alternate leaves. Each leaf is more or less ovate, 1/16–⅛″ (2–6 mm) long, with edges rolled under.
Flowers: White flowers, although densely clustered, open only one or two at a time. Each flower is cylindrical to funnel-shaped, 1/16–⅛″ (3–4 mm) long, with five stamens and five lobes.
Fruits: Each fruit has four black nutlets about 1/32″ (1 mm) long. Each nutlet contains a seed.
Habitats: Arid lowlands.
